When the day is done, the deeper healing begins

In Ayurveda, sleep is far more than rest. The classical texts honor nidra as one of the three upastambha, the pillars that support life, alongside ahara (nourishing food) and brahmacharya (the wise use of our vital energy). When sleep is sound, the body is renewed, the mind becomes clear, and ojas, our deepest strength and immunity, is quietly replenished. When sleep is disturbed, we feel it in every part of our lives.

Dreams carry their own wisdom. Each night the mind sorts through the impressions, feelings and experiences of the day. What we have fully digested is released. What remains undigested can settle as ama, a heavy, sticky residue that clouds the body and the mind alike. The images, colors and moods of our dreams often reflect which dosha is moving within us and what we may still be carrying.

In this two hour webinar, Dr. Vasant Lad gently guides you through the Ayurvedic understanding of sleep, dreams and consciousness. You will explore the four states of awareness, learn to recognize the qualities of your dreams and relate them to vata, pitta and kapha, and leave with a loving bedtime routine that helps the body and mind return home to rest.

What we will Explore Together

Understanding ama in body and mind: Discover how ama forms when agni, our digestive fire, is unable to fully process what we take in. Dr. Lad explores how this applies not only to food but also to thoughts, emotions and experiences, and how undigested feelings can quietly disturb our sleep.

The four stages of sleep and awareness: Journey through jagrat (waking), svapna (dreaming), sushupti (deep, dreamless sleep) and turiya, the fourth state of pure awareness that witnesses the other three. Learn what each state offers the body, the mind and the spirit.

Reading the gunas of your dreams: Learn to notice the qualities within your dreams and relate them to the doshas. Light, dry and moving dreams of flying, falling or being chased often speak of vata. Hot, sharp and intense dreams of fire, conflict or bright light reflect pitta. Heavy, slow and watery dreams of lakes, gardens or tender connection carry the nature of kapha.

Nidra as medicine: Understand why the classical texts place sleep among the pillars of health, how the time of night shapes the quality of rest, and how too little, too much or untimely sleep can unsettle the doshas.

The night as a teacher: how sleep and dreams help us digest life

Ayurveda teaches that the mind has its own digestion. Just as agni transforms food into nourishment, the subtle fire of the heart and mind, known as sadhaka pitta, helps us process thoughts, feelings and experiences. When this fire is strong, we absorb what nourishes us and let the rest go. When it is weak, unprocessed emotions such as grief, fear or anger can linger as mental ama, and very often they surface at night.

The hours of the night follow the rhythm of the doshas. Kapha time, from about 6 to 10 in the evening, brings a natural heaviness that eases us into sleep. Pitta time, from about 10 PM to 2 AM, is when the body and mind do their deepest work of transformation and cleansing. Vata time, from about 2 to 6 in the morning, carries movement and lightness, which is why dreams can feel especially vivid in the early hours and why this is a beautiful time to rise.

Dr. Lad also speaks of tarpaka kapha, the subtle form of kapha that nourishes the brain and holds our memories, and prana vayu, which governs the senses and the movement of the mind. When these are in balance, sleep comes easily and dreams flow without disturbance. By learning to read the qualities of our dreams with gentle curiosity, we can begin to see what the mind is still working through and support it with kindness, diet and daily routine.

Testimonials

Silke Zimmermann

I’m very glad I found Ayurprana on the Internet and having the possibility to study online with a wonderful team of great practitioners. This wonderful team at Ayurprana is doing an amazing job in teaching Ayurveda with their hearts.

I am glued to Dr. Lad's lips when he’s sharing all his wisdom and knowledge about Ayurveda. I had doubts about doing a massage seminar online and whether I would learn anything, but the classes are designed in a way that you can ask a lot of questions.

The replays can be watched over and over again, and you ask a friend at home to act as your massage client.

Certainly a life classe is always the better choice, but Dr. Lad gives so much insight into his knowledge and answers any question even beyond the Marma points.

I put the knowledge directly into practice and quickly received positive feedback from my clients.

What first piqued my interest in Ayurveda was an introduction I received in David Winston's 2-year Clinical Herbalist class. I then went on to read Dr. Lad's book "Ayurveda the Science of Self-Healing" and what really drew me in were your YouTube videos of "The Journey Within." Listening to Dr. Lad chant fills me with wonder, brings me to tears and makes my soul feel like it's being called home. The amount of meaningful content is staggering and I am so blessed to have found you all! I have been dipping my toe with Ayurveda for just over a year now and I have met and exceeded my goal weight with the help of your cleanses and yummy healthy recipes! I want you all to know that you have made a huge impact on my life and my heart is with you! Thank you, a million times, for making Ayurveda more accessible and understandable.❤️

This was amazing course. I have been practicing spiritual practices of Sadhguru and may I got to know about Dr Lad when there was a talk between the two. I have been following Ayurprana+ & Dr. Lad since then. I am always impressed when I get to know more about this ancient knowledge. I think there is no difference between Yoga and Ayurveda. I would like to continue this journey and keep learning about Ayurveda. Hope I can be part of your team in some ways.
