Why We Cleanse:

We all know the practice of spring cleaning - the ritual of clearing out the dust, dirt, and excess that our homes naturally accrue over the course of a long winter. This exact process of accumulation is actually happening in our bodies, the microcosm of our being too.

Every morsel of food, every TV show, every conversation, every feeling, and experience must be digested - and we inevitably can’t digest everything in the moment. These undigested foods, thoughts, and emotions turn into toxins over time - which we call ama in Ayurveda.

In Ayurveda, we place a lot of stock in cleansing at the changes in season, to help reset our system - decreasing the likelihood of these toxins building up and leading to disorders and illness.

The Ayurvedic Approach to Cleansing:

The traditional Ayurvedic cleanse aims to eliminate these accumulated toxins and energies from the body. Before these toxins can be expelled, we must first kindle the digestive fire - we do this to make sure our body has the capacity to “digest” and burn the toxins that get released from the deeper tissues during the cleansing process.

The key to igniting our agni is a mono-diet of kitchari over the course of the cleanse, generally a combination of mung daal, rice, ghee and spices. This simple, easy to digest meal gives the digestive system a break from having to consume so many different, often heavy foods, thereby freeing it up to do the “deep cleaning” it needs to.

What a cleanse most often entails:

An Ayurvedic home cleanse can be broken down into the following categories:

Pre-cleanse: In addition to beginning to kindle our digestive fire, we slowly wean ourselves off of gluten, dairy, alcohol, meat, caffeine, and processed foods and sugars the week before the cleanse. This gradually eases us into the detoxification process, which generally reduces common cleansing symptoms like fatigue, headaches, and general aches and pains.

External Oleation: The first few days of the cleanse we take ghee, or clarified butter, on an empty stomach in the morning. Ghee has a magical effect of penetrating the deeper tissues of the body, helping to loosen the sticky toxins lodged there. To support these toxins moving into the GI tract, so they can be expelled from the body, we encourage a daily self massage with warm oil (called abhyanga) where our movements direct the released ama toward the center of the body.

Purgation: Once the toxins have been brought back to the GI tract, they are ready to be purged. One method for purgation is taking a small amount of castor oil - a strong laxative that serves to empty the intestines and bowels of these accumulated toxins.

Basti: After resting post-purgation, it’s time for a sequence of herbal tea enemas to support in cleansing any residual toxins from the system as well as nourishing the colon. Rasayana + Post Cleanse

Transition: Preserve your hard work of the last 16 days by slowly reintroducing your normal diet. This is also the period of rejuvenation where we rebuild the deeper tissues.

Benefits of cleansing:

A reset for your digestion, hormones, nervous system, and natural bodily rhythms

Bolstered immunity along with mental and emotional resilience

A profound release of what no longer serves - physically, mentally, and emotionally

A deeper understanding of your body, your mind, and your energy and the relationship they share

Deep rejuvenation and lightness of body, mind, and spirit

Greater insight and intuition into the next stage of the evolution of you

Increased understanding of cause and effect in relation to your diet and lifestyle choices

More moment to moment awareness and presence

Who is the ideal audience for a cleanse?

A cleanse is ideal for anyone and everyone, but particularly if you’re experiencing any of the following concerns:

  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Low appetite, emotional eating, cravings or indigestion (gas, bloating, heartburn, sleepiness after meals)
  • Aches and pains
  • Unprocessed emotions or a heavy heart
  • Seasonal allergies
  • Getting sick and/or congested easily
  • Not feeling like your best self
  • You want to finally prioritize YOU and your long term health and wellness, for your sake as well as for your loved ones

Winter cleanse

Release the light and dry qualities of fall/autumn and usher in the groundedness of winter.

The fall/autumn period and early winter season is associated with Vata dosha, which is predominantly composed of the elements ether (space) and air. We see these elements manifest in the light, dry, cold, rough, mobile, and clear qualities of autumn and early winter: the crunchy roughness of the turning leaves, the chilly crispness of the wind. As these qualities increase around us, so do they increase within us - constipation, gas, bloating, cold hands and feet, low back pain, cramping during menses, cracking and popping joints, insomnia, as well as feelings of anxiety, insecurity, fear or loneliness are all signs of elevated Vata dosha. If any of these apply, this is the cleanse for you! Get ready to feel grounded and nourished on every level.

Kick off: January 13, 2023
Cleanse: January 22 - 31, 2023
Close out: February 3, 2023

Spring cleanse

Shake off the moisture of winter and spring in preparation for the warmth of summer.

Kapha dosha, which is predominantly earth and water elements, is the principle of cohesion and the building block material - it’s stable, cool, oily, heavy, dull, liquid, slimy, sticky, cloudy, and dense. It’s associated with both late winter and spring. Kapha is responsible for cold, cough, and congestion, water retention, weight gain, as well as the emotions of attachment, greed, and grief. If any of this sounds or feels familiar - join this cleanse and lighten your load!

Kick off: May 1, 2023
Cleanse: May 7 - 16, 2023
Close out: May 19, 2023

Fall cleanse

Release the excess heat of summer in preparation for the movement of fall.

Summer is the season of Pitta dosha - primarily fire and water elements, it’s the principle of transformation and metabolism. Pitta is hot, sharp, light, liquid, spreading, slightly oily, and has a fleshy smell (yep, you know the one…). Common signs of elevated pitta are anything heat related - burning sensations, inflammation, skin concerns involving redness, itchiness, loose stools, heartburn, waking in the middle of the night, as well as pitta type emotions of anger, irritation, judgment and criticism of self and/or others. Calling all perfectionists (ourselves included) - take this cleanse!

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time do I need to set aside for the cleanse?

This is a thorough and in-depth, traditional Ayurvedic cleanse. The processes themselves will take roughly 1-1.5 hours a day on average, in addition to the Live sessions with our health coaches. Certain days, such as the enema days, may take an additional half-hour or so more.

Can I do this while I work or work from home?

We do recommend that you do your best to clear your calendar and schedule as the cleansing process naturally can lead to a temporary period of fatigue and some mild discomfort, which then resolves as the body is rebuilt and rejuvenated. Each body is different and responds differently. Conserving as much of your energy as possible for the cleansing process will best serve you.

What can I expect to feel like during the cleanse?

There are different phases during the cleanse, each with different experiences, discomforts, and feelings of relief. You will experience ups and downs in energy, mood, maybe even occasional nausea, as the cleansing process occurs. Each body is different and responds differently.

I have a strict diet, will I be able to do the monotrophic (MONO) diet?

The mono diet involves a kitchari (mix of mung daal and basmati rice) diet. We provide guidance of modifications for specific diets. The mono diet is a very simple and easy-to-digest diet, which allows the digestive fire to rest and reset. This is crucial to the cleansing process.

What if I am on an herbal protocol or am taking medications?

We always recommend you consult with your primary care provider before making any changes to your health care plan or adding any supplements to your plan.

Can I continue my normal exercise routine or bodywork treatments during the cleanse?

The cleanse process takes a significant amount of energy and processing. We therefore recommend following our AyurYoga program as provided during the cleanse or very light body movement. For the same reason, we recommend stopping bodywork during a cleanse.

Are you providing consultations as part of this cleanse?

We are not providing individual consultations. Our goal is to empower you with all the material and education you need to complete a cleanse. Our staff will be available 24 hours a day to answer questions and provide additional guidance and education through our Facebook private group.

I do not have Facebook. Is this a requirement?

All material that you need to complete the cleanse is provided in the AyurLearn online portal. While are actively working to find an independent platform in the very near future, at this time, if you wish to access the support of the community and our practitioners you will need to create a Facebook account. Our group is private and not visible to anyone outside of the cleanse participants.

What if I can’t make the Live Zoom session? Will there be a replay?

We absolutely anticipate that not everyone can make it at the time we are playing the Live session. All sessions will be recorded and available for viewing in the AyurLearn portal within 48-72 hours after the session.

What is your cancellation policy?

We will gladly issue a full refund up until 7 days before the Kick-Off. After this date, we cannot issue a refund as all materials will have been opened to the participants.

Questions? We would love to get you answers!
