The heart of the matter

The Heart is one of the vital organs of the body. From an Ayurvedic perspective, we see the heart as the root of the vital breath and lymph carrying channels; Prana and Rasa Vaha Srotas. It is the muscular pump at the center of the body that regulates the flow of these vital substances to all other organs, tissues and cells of the body as well as itself. Its role in supporting respiration and intelligence, as well as the nutrition of the bodily tissues, is all-important.

Ayurveda and the heart: a holistic system of understanding

Alongside its physiological functions, Ayurveda understands the health of the heart to be central in the emotional and spiritual wellbeing of every individual. As the storage site of Para Ojas, the superior essence of all the bodily tissues, it provides nourishment and satisfaction to each and every cell of the body. As the home of Sadhaka Pitta, the heart is an intelligent organ that enables comprehension and insight to flower in the mind. As contained within Anahata Chakra, the heart is the root of the ten nadis that are connected with the five senses and as the seat of Mind itself, the heart is the origin of feelings, thoughts and emotions, and holds the power to open the doors of perception to deeper Truth and connection. The heart is the seat of the individual identity (Ahamkara) and as such, connecting emotionally and spiritually with the heart unfolds self-realization and Bhakti: devotion.

Understanding pathologies and restoring balance

Due to imbalances in our diet, lifestyle or unresolved emotions such as stress, worry and sorrow, the heart can become imbalanced. Imbalances of Hrd can manifest in a variety of different forms including high or low blood pressure, arrhythmias, heart disease, angina and even heart attack.

In this webinar, Vasant Lad, BAM&S, MASc, founder and director of The Ayurvedic Institute, will unpack the multiple concepts and pathologies directly connected to this vital organ through an Ayurvedic lens. He will draw on his decades of clinical Ayurvedic experience as he reveals herbs, dietary interventions, and lifestyle amendments to restore balance and health. .
