Yakrut: an Ayurvedic perspective
Yakrut is one of the vital organs of the body. From an Ayurvedic perspective, the liver is the root of the blood carrying channels (Rakta Vaha Srotas), the seat of Ranjaka Pitta and the location of the five elemental Bhuta Agnis of the body.
East meets West: A Holistic understanding of the Liver
The roles and functions of the liver are many. It produces the bile essential to the digestion of fats and supports the elimination and absorption of minerals like calcium and magnesium. It is home to Ranjaka Pitta, which gives color to the blood and plays an important role as the site of blood formation in the embryological stage of life. As the root of the blood carrying channels, the liver continues to play a role in blood storage, destruction and recycling throughout the life of an individual. As the site of the five elemental or Bhuta Agnis, the liver helps to absorb the elements present in our nutrition so that each of these elements may be present in healthy levels in our deeper tissues. A protective organ, the liver detoxifies toxins from our bodies. On a subtler level, the liver is the seat of will and desire, and without the liver, there is no will to live nor love of life.
Loving the liver: identifying pathologies and restoring balance
Due to imbalances in our diet, lifestyle or unresolved emotions such as anger and hate, the liver can become imbalanced. Imbalances of Yakrut can manifest in a variety of different forms including vitamin and mineral deficiencies, anemia, jaundice, hepatitis and cirrhosis. Seeing as the liver is the root of the blood carrying channels, liver imbalances can also show up as skin disorders such as rashes and acne.
In this webinar, Vasant Lad, BAM&S, MASc, founder and director of The Ayurvedic Institute, will unpack the multiple concepts and pathologies directly connected to this vital organ through an Ayurvedic lens. He will draw on his decades of clinical Ayurvedic experience as he reveals herbs, dietary interventions, and lifestyle amendments to restore balance and health.
