Empowering Self Support - Women’s Health Through Ayurveda Pt. 1

Ayurveda is the science of life - and life, just like the cosmos from which it originates, is governed by cycles. It’s the highest goal of Ayurvedic practice to help us identify and work with these cycles. It’s the root belief of Ayurveda that all wellness, wholeness, and wellbeing emerge from this dance of inner and outer harmony.

Western medicine and science have made huge strides in understanding the female-sexed body - but, as a result, the common knowledge of our own bodies has largely been lost from our culture, and our medical practitioners and female healthcare professionals now hold the keys to our wellness.

Through the lens of Ayurveda we can reacquaint ourselves with our personal health, come to appreciate a deeper understanding of our own bodies and become empowered to support ourselves in our day-to-day wellness.

In this first webinar in this 2-part series, Vasant Lad, BAM&S, MASc, will embark on an overview of common disorders that can affect the female-sexed body from an Ayurvedic perspective and how we can work to remedy these in our daily routines. Coming to appreciate the cycles and functions of female health and how they impact us, from the onset of menarche all the way through to menopause.

In this first installment, Vasant Lad will explore the physiology of the female-sexed body through the various stages of life. After this webinar you will have a deeper understanding of your menstrual cycle as per your specific constitution across the doshas - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

Menstrual Self-Care

The menstrual cycle can also be seen as a monthly cleanse and in the Ayurvedic tradition we can use this knowledge to support our own body at this time. As with any other cleanse, rest and rejuvenation are key, and kindling agni - our fiery metabolic energy. For this reason, women in India are often given the opportunity to be relieved from any duties so that their bodies can cleanse on both the physical and mental level. In this framing the menstrual cycle becomes a gift and can be viewed as such, instead of being viewed as a nuisance or inconvenience.

Some Helpful Guidelines for a Healthy Menstrual Cleanse*

Eat a simple diet. You want to reserve all of your body’s digestive fire for the purpose of cleansing. Eating kitchari and other warm, thoroughly cooked meals will do just that. Try adding spices, such as ginger, cardamom, saffron, cumin, coriander, fennel, and cinnamon.

Honor yourself with rest and rejuvenation. Cleansing involves the movement of wastes down and out of the body and we want to be sure that that directional flow is not counteracted by upward movements, like excessive talking or thinking, sexual intercourse, and even pranayama and yoga. These activities also take up a lot of energy and your body needs to use all of its reserve energy towards cleansing.

Don’t suppress urges, like urination, defecation, and sneezing. Doing so promotes vata to travel in the opposite direction of its normal downward flow.

Reflect and meditate. One of the functions of menstruation is emotional release. Making time and space for reflection and meditation allows you to digest past thoughts, emotions, and experiences that your being has not yet been able to. This strengthens the mental and emotional digestive fire and brings clarity and lightness at a deeper level.

Hydrate. As with any other cleanse, hydration is of utmost importance to move wastes. During a menstrual cleanse, hydrate with warm teas, such as ginger tea, lemon tea with honey, or CCF tea (cumin, coriander, and fennel).
